  • 56.9 million Americans actively surf the web on a mobile phone? (source: Nielsen July 2009)
  • Another 122 million say that mobile internet access will be a deciding factor in their next phone purchase?
  • Web browsing on mobile devices was up 300% in 2008?
  • Google search on mobile is growing 40% per quarter?
  • 84% of people surveyed expect websites to have a mobile-specific version?
  • And that only 0.2% of websites are actually optimized for mobile?

Like it or not, more and more people are using the internet on their mobile phones. And they’re coming to your site — through search, from other sites, or from typing in your domain name.

A site that doesn't work well on mobile

Chances are good they’re not finding what they need.

While it’s true that modern smart phones can “render” your existing site, here’s why that’s not working:

  • Shrunken text is hard to read
  • Layout and navigation that works on a desktop browser is hard to use on mobile
  • Flash content doesn’t display
  • Sites with many large images can overwhelm a phone.

Keep in mind, too, that mobile users have different priorities than desktop users. After all, they’re mobile. They need different kinds of information.

So what works?

Mobile users need sites that are:

  • fast
  • easy to use
  • interesting
  • targeted at their needs

This means you need to answer their most pressing questions, quickly and completely, and give them a clear path to call you, make a purchase, or find your location.

Here are a few “before and after” sites that DO work on mobile:
